Steps for Administering Corticosteroid Injections

1. Preparation: Ensure that you have all the necessary supplies ready, including corticosteroid medication, syringes, needles, alcohol swabs, and gloves.
2. Patient Assessment: Conduct a thorough assessment of the patient’s medical history and current condition to determine the appropriateness of the injection.
3. Site Selection: Choose the appropriate injection site, commonly used sites include intramuscular, intra-articular, or subcutaneous locations. Anatomical landmarks should be identified to minimize risk.
4. Skin Disinfection: Clean the selected injection site with an alcohol swab in a circular motion, starting from the center and moving outward.
5. Administration: Insert the needle at the correct angle depending on the type of injection being administered (typically 90 degrees for intramuscular and 45 degrees for subcutaneous). Aspirate to ensure you are not in a blood vessel before injecting the corticosteroid.
6. Post-Injection Care: Once the injection is administered, withdraw the needle promptly and apply gentle pressure to the site with a cotton ball or gauze. Dispose of all needles and syringes in a sharps container.
7. Follow-Up: Monitor the patient for any immediate adverse reactions and provide aftercare instructions, including potential side effects and when to seek further medical advice.
